I'd be one of those emo badass characters that would critize the protagonist a bunch of times in the first season and act like he's not on his side and then show up at the final boss-battle last minute and make the ultimate sacrifice for the main cast.

But then later on we find out that you're not really dead, so you end up joining the main characters and become their friends and everything is all cool, right?

You could start out small and then in like the 3rd or 4th series we actually find out you have some super badass powers when the writers can't think of any more decent plots.
