I've watched a ton of Relius gameplay lately, and I've yet to see a player get sandwiched between Ignis and Relius. To me, it seems that Ignis is simply a single projectile attack. Sure, Ignis is used in most combos, but not in the way Ada is where you are actually multitasking.
What I'm trying to understand is whether Ignis is basically just one projectile attack (she spins forward towards the opponent) or am I misunderstanding how Relius plays?
(sorry this is kinda a derpy topic, but I didn't know where to ask)

If you dress D, you summon Ignis. If you let go, she goes away. Does that answer it?

Partly. It explains that Ignis is a bit more than a visual part of combos in that it's your job to keep her summoned. It doesn't explain to what extent you actually are controlling two characters though. I'm inferring that my aforementioned projectile attack and keeping her summoned is all there really is to Ignis?

Did you bothered to watch gameplay videos? All the moves she does in combos can be done outside of them as well. It uses the same logic as Ragna's 5B>5C>Hells Fang. you can do any of them without having to use another, but you can put them together for a combo.

Relius and Ignis combos follow the same logic: Stringing shit together to form a combo.

That'll be so annoying on an Arcade stick...

Oh, wow... I thought pressing D would summon her and pressing it again would release her.

*is now a lot less motivated to try playing Relius*

Wow that does sound annoying if you have to hold it down.

Makes Carl seem easier.

if you have to hold down D to keep her out then imo thats a fair trade off when you consider she performs homing attacks unlike Ada in having to be manually positioned.

I don't mind positioning ada but I hate holding down the button Since I play on a fight stick.
